Authentic eco-friendly experiences
Bad Bederkesa, Geestland’s tourist attraction, is home to the Ahlenmoor, one of Germany’s most important upland moors, recognised for its rich biodiversity. Visitors can responsibly explore the moor along signposted trails and a 2 km boardwalk, while educational stations provide insights into the local flora and fauna and the moor’s role in the climate. Low-impact activities like kayaking on the moor lake or unwinding at the Moor Therme spa combine wellness with nature, enabling tourists to connect with the environment while helping to preserve it. The spa’s energy-efficient systems demonstrate real CO₂ savings, providing visitors with a tangible understanding of sustainability in practice.
By offering authentic nature experiences, wellness activities and accessible trails, the destination raises awareness of conservation while enhancing visitor enjoyment. The combination of ecological protection, smart mobility and community engagement ensures that tourism contributes positively to the local area’s wellbeing and long-term sustainability.
Smart and Sustainable Mobility
One of Geestland’s core missions is sustainable mobility, as demonstrated by the introduction of an electric driverless bus offering free rides during the trial phase. Supported by the Smart Cities programme, the project also promotes other eco-friendly ways to get around, such as e-bike charging, shared taxis and cargo bike rentals. By testing this innovative approach, the city hopes to inspire other communities to combine smart technology with more environmentally friendly mobility solutions. Additionally, Geestland is committed to energy efficiency and has switched all street lighting to LED, reducing electricity use by 72%. The destination has also planted 35,000 trees, one for each resident. Energy-saving upgrades in historic buildings and places such as the Moor Therme not only cut costs but also make eco-friendly practices visible to everyone.
