Building an accessible and inclusive future
Genoa is committed to creating a city that is both accessible and socially inclusive. This commitment is reflected in the creation and publication of its Plan for the Elimination of Architectural Barriers (PEBA). To further ensure equal accessibility for all, the city is improving access to its beaches, such as the Capo Marina beach. It has been equipped with a sea lift to facilitate access to the sea for bathing. The FUNT Genova4all project enhances accessibility in the old town, including civic museums and key artwork. Websites, apps, digital documents, and online services are designed to ensure barrier-free access for a range of users. Meanwhile, the Accessible City Pass tracks and analyses accessibility patterns and user preferences, providing a valuable tool for generating insights.
Cultural heritage and creativity
Genoa takes a strategic, future-oriented approach to the sustainable development of its cultural heritage. The city’s Strategic Cultural Plan promotes entrepreneurship and innovation in historic districts, preserving cultural identity while fostering a dynamic, socially inclusive tourism ecosystem. These actions demonstrate a sustainable approach to cultural development, combining local values with international best practices. Through the Genoa City Pass, visitors enjoy discounted access to over 150 museums, libraries, and archives, with future plans to integrate it into regional platforms. The city’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable urban regeneration is highlighted by innovative redevelopment projects and the revitalisation of former industrial districts.
Technology supporting sustainable tourism
The city’s digital tools enhance both urban life and the tourism experience, highlighting Genoa’s commitment to smart solutions. Recognised as one of Italy’s most digitally advanced cities in the ICity Rank 2025 report, Genoa has successfully integrated technology, infrastructure, and services in its tourism offer. Tools such as the VisitGenoa app and the Loquis travel podcast platform offer virtual and augmented reality tours, themed routes, and interactive 3D experiences of the city’s landmarks. Another key digital initiative is the VOX platform, currently in development, which digitises Genoa’s tourist card system, offering easy access to attractions and interactive guides, while supporting sustainable tourism.
Advancing urban sustainability
Genoa is pursuing a variety of innovative measures to advance its sustainability strategy. The city’s long-term, multi-stakeholder approach is aligned with international goals. For instance, the ‘Surpluse Reuse Centres’and waste-to-resource transformation projects illustrate how circular economy principles are embedded in the city’s urban policies and infrastructure planning. These measures are driving long-term change, evidenced by a 6.5% annual reduction in pollution in tourist areas. City-wide initiatives like the Sustainability Card and sustainable event guidelines promote responsible behaviour and provide citizens with access to various services. Collectively, these measures highlight Genoa’s proactive approach to evolving its sustainability strategy.
