Sustainable Consumption and Resource Efficiency
The Municipality of Marmaris is committed to smart energy use and efficient resource management. Through the Zero Waste Initiative, the city is prioritising public policies to improve waste separation infrastructure and has set itself an ambitious goal of raising recycling rates from 30% to 70%. To further reduce waste, all organic food residues in the city are converted into animal feed, supporting circularity in the hospitality sector. In terms of energy efficiency, Marmaris is investing in retrofitting public buildings and providing incentives for installing solar panels. These measures have already led to significant reductions in public energy consumption.
Adapting to Climate Change
With a strong focus on climate adaptation, Marmaris is currently developing its Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP), with the aim of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Key initiatives under this plan include urban greening with green corridors and soil stabilisation in post-fire areas. These practices are designed to mitigate urban heat and reduce erosion, thereby protecting marine ecosystems and strengthening the city’s overall environmental resilience.
Community Involvement in Tourism
The local communities of Marmaris play an active role in the municipality’s green transition. They are invited to participate in every stage of sustainable improvement and innovation projects through regular public meetings and neighbourhood forums. The municipality has also created a training programme focused on sustainability aimed at small local businesses. The programme helps to manage visitor numbers, encourage responsible development, and make better use of natural resources. Additionally, off-season events, including New Year celebrations, local food festivals, and spring cultural events, allow the city to distribute the number of tourists throughout the year, creating new jobs and easing economic pressure during peak holiday seasons.
