European Capital and Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism

Aveiro - shortlisted in the 2025 Green Pioneer Competition

Aveiro, Portugal, is on a mission to make the municipality more accessible and sustainable through innovative practices that enhance both the local area and the tourist experience.

Significant impact of green practices

Aveiro is striving to become a leader in sustainability and innovation. The city has launched the BUGA shared bicycle system, which offers a wider network and new models of bikes for use around the city. The bikes are equipped with an integrated GPS system, enabling the city to assess the most popular routes and better manage public spaces. Residents and visitors are provided with a wide array of sustainable mobility options, including Portugal’s first fully electric ferry, electric moliceiros (boats), and electric buses. These initiatives have significantly contributed to reducing the city's CO2 emissions.

Aveiro

Improving the city with the local community in mind

Aveiro’s green practices are designed to improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors. Enhanced urban spaces and expanded pedestrian routes not only reduce traffic in the city centre but also create zones of coexistence. The availability of environmentally friendly transport options makes daily commuting more pleasant and sustainable for residents. Furthermore, residents are encouraged to participate in a waste management scheme, where they can earn points for correct waste disposal, redeemable for discounts, or exchange items they no longer need.

Aveiro

Preserving cultural heritage

As the first Portuguese Capital of Culture in 2024, Aveiro has created a year-round cultural programme that promotes local heritage and preserves its unique cultural assets. This programme, accessible to a variety of audiences, celebrates local heritage and identity, the democratisation of culture, creativity, and technological innovation. The appreciation and understanding of local nature and biodiversity will remain a priority in the coming years.

Aveiro

Long-term green transition goals

Aveiro has adopted a Municipal Climate Action Plan, aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change, with a direct target of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In addition, the city is focused on monitoring air quality, providing real-time data on air quality and noise levels through an Urban Platform.
