Sustainable mobility efforts
To preserve its natural environment and urban infrastructure, Jurmala has implemented a fee for entering the city by car, with the exception of electric vehicles. This initiative not only reduces traffic flow through the resort but also encourages the use of more environmentally friendly modes of transport. The city offers a free bus service for residents, along with a free twice-daily train service to Latvia’s capital, Riga. Additionally, electric city buses and electric cars used by Jurmala City Council employees help reduce the negative impact of traffic in the city.
Community involvement initiatives
The local community in Jurmala is encouraged to participate in making the city a better place for everyone. The city organises workshops to discuss solutions for improving neighbourhoods and the urban environment. Residents can share their ideas, which are then submitted as proposals to the city’s municipality for potential implementation. Jurmala is also dedicated to involving young people in its tourism sector by co-financing wages for young workers in tourism and hospitality companies during the summer months. Furthermore, the municipality organises competitions and provides funding to entrepreneurs for business development in the city.
Environmentally friendly solutions
Jurmala implements numerous projects with a positive environmental impact. These include an energy management system that monitors and analyses the consumption of heat, electricity, and water, as well as the amount of waste produced by municipal institutions and buildings. The city has upgraded lighting systems to improve energy efficiency and created a smart lighting platform. It also uses solar- and wind-powered lighting systems, with solar batteries and wind generators installed in several of the city’s swimming areas. A unique solar panel park has been installed on water, with a floating solar power generation station located in post-purification water pools to reduce carbon emissions.
